The East Village Look—Again!

October 11, 1984 — a fashion show and an art show at Danceteria.
“Parallel to the shows, the question was always how to promote them in a time before the internet. We printed thousands of complimentary admissions. The shows went on at 11 p.m. and lasted about an hour—sometimes two. I had millions of minions distributing those comp invites. We put them in trendy boutiques and created a frenzy out of free air.
Rudolf had mailing lists, guest lists, or just plain lists. He was a list guy. We hit Parsons and F.I.T. and brought all those kids inside. We were sexy. We fulfilled our message: “Dress up. Have fun.” Win, win, win!
I became addicted to the lifestyle: a poor, innocent boy from middle-class Queens meeting bon vivants.”
