The History of
Danceteria

In the late 1970s, as downtown New York’s music and art scenes began spilling into one another, Danceteria opened on West 37th Street. Created by Rudolf Piper, it was an after-hours club with an open, anything-could-happen spirit. The dates vary slightly across historical accounts, so “around 1980” is the safest shorthand for its beginnings.

In 1982, Danceteria moved to 30 West 21st Street, taking over the former Interferon space. The multi-floor club brought together dance floors, live music, fashion, performance, and video. It became the best-known chapter of Danceteria’s story, and a setting in Desperately Seeking Susan.

Its crowd mixed artists, musicians, dancers, downtown regulars, and people who came simply to see what might happen. Keith Haring and David Wojnarowicz worked at the first club; Madonna made an early live appearance at Danceteria; and the scene included figures such as Jean-Michel Basquiat, RuPaul, and the Beastie Boys.

Music was central to the club’s influence. Ruth Polsky booked acts across new wave, post-punk, and emerging alternative scenes, while Danceteria also made room for hip-hop, fashion shows, film screenings, video art, and performance. Its importance came from that mix: the club made nightlife a place where music, style, and art could meet—and where new talent could find an audience.

The 21st Street Danceteria closed in 1986, but its legacy lives on in the artists it brought together and the many careers and cultural moments that began, grew, or crossed paths there. The club captured a particular downtown New York moment: restless, inventive, and always in motion.
